Is An Indoor Dog House For My Small Dog A Good Idea?

If you have a canine that is 20 pounds or less, then your pet would fall into the small category. Beyond that weight you would jump into the medium and then large variety.

Of course, if your small Dachshund weighs in at 30 pounds, you have a much different problem.

At the moment I have two pets that qualify for this small designation, so I can relate to how you feel about your little friend.

The little dogs tend to be underfoot more than large dogs and are often hard to see when on the floor. This becomes a big issue for older people or people that have vision difficulties.

If your dog doesn't have a specific place or dog house to call home where they can be confined some of the time, they will wander all over your house and become a problem. This is especially true if you have guests or a large family.

Since they tend to move very quickly, small dogs can be in the way and in danger before you even realize it. They can even bolt out of the door and into the street before you can catch them.

Because of this I firmly believe that your small dog should have their own dog house within your house. The home you designate for them doesn't have to be anything fancy or specially made.

My two have their own crates in our laundry room where they sleep at night and where we can put them if we are going out. It is also very handy to be able to confine them if they are becoming nuisance, such as at dinner time or when we are entertaining.

No matter which type of enclosure you select, keep in mind that all dogs like to have that feeling of being secure in a den type atmosphere, in other words, they like being cozy.

It's a good idea to have their food and water available in the same area as their dog house. In this way everything is confined and your dog will know it's limits. You can also have all their toys, special blankets and other dog related items right there as well.

Since my dogs are actually in a room, I can use a child gate across the opening to lock them in, but they still have that open feeling. This is very handy when I go out or want to put them in "time out" for being bad.

Every pet needs a space that they can call their own and feel comfortable in. Having a dog house for your little pet will help solve many problems for you and for your furry little friend. Having a safe and secure place to go will make your small dog happier and will also make your life easier
