Stop Barking Dogs and Get Them to Quiet Down

These are techniques to stop your dog from excessive barking. All of them have the tendency to be successful, but one must be realistic and not expect miracles to happen overnight. And take note that the longer your dog has been used to his excessive barking behavior, the longer it will take for him to change.

The very first thing to take note of when training is that patience is the key. Don't yell at your dog to be quiet, it just probably sounds like you are barking along with him, thus, encouraging him to bark more. Keep your training sessions positive and upbeat. Dogs pick up from your behavior, so if you are lethargic, odds are, he will be too. Be consistent so as not to confuse your dog. Everyone in the family must apply the training methods you are giving him. If one person in the family neglects your training, then all your efforts will just go to waste.

Situational Examples

Here are some common situations that may make a dog bark alongside with solutions to each. First, barking at a passerby. If he barks at a passerby through the window, manage his behavior by putting your dog in another room. If he barks at a passerby in the lawn, get him inside the house. Ignore him for as long as it takes him to stop. Don't give him any attention at all while he's barking. Your attention only rewards him for being noisy. To be successful in this method, be consistent. Don't give him the satisfaction of your attention. Once you cave, it only means that if her barks long enough, you will eventually give him attention.

Another example would be barking when confined. Your dog may bark while in his crate or confined to a room because he wants to be with you. Just turn your back and ignore him. Whenever he stops barking, turn around and reward him with a treat. As he gets the idea that he gets a treat for being quiet, try lengthening the amount of time he must remain quiet in order to get a treat. Start small and gradually your dog will get the hang of it. If you find that a stimulus is causing his excessive barking, expose him to it. And give him a treat if he doesn't bark even with its presence.

These are just simple situations. Many more can cause your dog to go berserk. But the main thing to remember is to be consistent.
